First Post!
Hey there! My name is Alysha Matthews. I am currently in graduate school getting my MFA in Creative Writing - Fiction at UofSC. I’m on assistantship which means that I’m tutoring (I’ll be teaching next fall) for the university in exchange for a little stipend and some classes. I dabble with emotional, thriller-esque-type stories that explore identity in (what I hope is) an interesting way. When I grow up, I want to be a professor (preferably of creative writing) and an author.
This is my first year of graduate school and being on the instructional side of academia. I’m also fresh off the undergraduate press. So I’m experiencing a lot of new things and learning a lot about myself as a result. I’m starting this blog because I wanted a place to discuss some of these things, and I wanted a place to share some things that God has been teaching me in this new season.
I met Jesus in the 5th grade, but I didn’t understand the true weight of that until high school. I had a few lukewarm years in undergrad, but this past summer I decided to take my walk with God seriously again. So here I am! I haven’t met very many Christians in academia. I’ve also struggled to find Christians my age in general. I hope to encourage and connect with them through this blog.
You can expect some devotional-type posts, some thought pieces regarding academia, and posts that look at where the two cross. I might also share a book review here and there, but it’s hard to find time to read for pleasure.
Right now, I want to post twice a month (I’m a busy bee) and see where that goes!
I’m going to work on a fun header for these emails. In the meantime, I hope a wall of text is okay. :)
Thank you for being here!
